Stories of USA: American Pride, American Patriotism

How WE the PEOPLE Can Reclaim America!

MAGIC HAPPENS and TONY ORLANDO APPEARS

You know that I say from time to time on the show that ”MAGIC HAPPENS”! Magic happened a couple of weeks ago. A friend and I drove to Brea, where I spoke to the BREA RWF. We discovered, if nothing else, that Brea is a wonderful town, full of shops and old movie theaters and restaurants and outdoor cafes. Did I say gorgeous shops? The first Magic is finding new shopping areas!
The Second Magic is THE BREA RWF, a group of very dedicated Republicans, a group of action women, who are honoring our Troops by sending boxes of items to them in Afghanistan every month. One of the members has a husband and a son both there. Their meeting was full of Americanism and Patriotism, reading excerpts from General George Washington’s speech to his bedraggled, freezing men on Christmas Eve, before crossing the Delaware and their subsequent victory that defeated the Brits. The lesson was Courage. Do we have such courage to fight Communism now? That was the question.
One of the speakers for Supervisor Shawn Nelson’s office said that he had to hurry off to the Richard Nixon Library, where there was a party, commemorating the 40th Anniversary of the Return of the POW’S from Vietnam. Ironically, the Nixon Library was already on our list of stops for the day. After going back to shop for a minute, well, maybe longer, we were on to visit the Nixon Library…….the next Magic.
Arrived about 2 p.m., we thought that party for the Vietnam POW’s was already over, so we started our tour. About 10 minutes into the tour, we heard live music, followed it and discovered that the ceremony for the Veterans and their families was just starting.
We ran to the outdoor garden event, past the Reflecting Pool, and got there just as it began…….the Prayer, the Pledge, the Marine Band, a soloist, singing the “Star Spangled Banner”. WOW……MAGIC HAPPENS!
More importantly, there were all of the POW’S, men and women that had personally suffered so much for America. The Hanoi Hilton and all of the horrors spots, words from the past, were named. Some of these same Veterans had actually been welcomed home by Nixon 40 years ago……who knew? The press never reported that one that I can remember.
Joining the Veterans was Nixon’s brother, one of Nixon’s son-in-laws, Christopher Cox, and some of Nixon’s grandchildren. They, with a representative from each of the branches of the military and the wife of one of the MIA’S, laid a wreath on former President Nixon’s grave, which is just to the left side of the podium in a lovely rose garden. Then the speeches, the fly overs, the dignitaries, everything going along as usual…and then the Big Magic. Tony Orlando appears and you know what song he sang. Yes,”TIE A YELLOW RIBBON ROUND THE OLE OAK TREE”. With tears in our eyes, we all sang with Tony. He went up and down the aisles to different Vets with the mike. They all sang with Tony and they all knew every word of the song. It was wonderful…….it was MAGIC!
I was so humbled to be with these Veterans. However, during the entire event in my mind’s eye were the faces of my school friends, just boys, my childhood buddies, Robert Smith and Bobbie Crawford, always honored at every Class Reunion.
58,000 died in Vietnam, but for this day these POW’S were home and smiling with their families. I do not recall the exact number of MIA’S that never have returned…..what a tragedy!
A giant Bar-B-Q for them followed. I suppose my friend and I could have gone, but neither of us thought that it was appropriate. We are not part of this group. They are their own special group. We were only cheering for them and being so proud of them.
We decided to finish the tour, found a docent to take us through Nixon’s family home, where Nixon was born, even though it was after hours……More MAGIC!
But it gets even better. As we were leaving, there stood Tony Orlando, having photos made at the podium. A Photo Moment, but, both of our cell phones were out of charge…….Bummer!
Tony Orlando to the rescue. What a doll! When he found out that we were both from Palm Springs, he told his photographer to take our pictures, get our addresses, and mail the pictures to us…..OMG! The photographer looked annoyed. We hope he will follow through.
But, Tony Orlando! What a Star! He was so personable, such a gentleman and what a giant smile. MAGIC HAPPENS!
Will he really be a guest on the show? I guess you will have to listen every Sunday and find out.
The day was full of fun and surprises. It was serendipitous……and MAGIC! Even though Memorial Day was the next Monday, I had a wonderful early Memorial Day with my guys, now men, home and safe with their families and smiling with Tony Orlando!
